Can a Chemical Peel Improve My Eyelids?

Can a Chemical Peel Improve My Eyelids?

Age and UV exposure can take a toll on the delicate skin that surrounds your eyes, causing wrinkles, drooping, and bags. Chemical peels are one of the most popular ways to restore a youthful glow to your skin without the need for surgery or injections — even improving your eyelids.

At Radiance Wellness MediSpa in Southlake and Granbury, Texas, Carrie L. Morris, MD, FACS, and her team specialize in cosmetic and reconstructive eyelid surgery as well as nonsurgical facial and eyelid rejuvenation treatments.  Let’s take a look at what a chemical peel can do to improve the appearance of your eyelids.

What is a chemical peel?

Chemical peel treatments use a solution, such as glycolic acid or trichloroacetic acid, to exfoliate the outermost layers of skin. The process stimulates collagen production in the treated area, leading to visibly smoother, younger-looking skin.

Chemical peels can be used alone or in conjunction with other treatments to address skin concerns such as:

The type of chemical peel we use depends on your skin’s sensitivity and the issues you want to address. A light or superficial peel removes the top layer of skin cells, or epidermis, to smooth out fine lines and fade dark spots. You may need a light peel every two to five weeks to achieve your desired results.

Medium-strength and deep chemical peels remove the epidermis and cells from the middle layer of skin, or dermis. These types of peels provide dramatic results after one or two treatments.

How can a chemical peel improve my eyelids?

The skin around your eyes is thinner and more delicate than elsewhere on your face. In fact, it’s usually the thinnest skin on your body. The signs of age show up faster in this area and result in imperfections such as crow’s feet and under-eye bags.

A chemical peel speeds up your skin’s natural exfoliation process, removing the damaged outer cells to reveal healthy, new skin beneath. When we treat the eyelid area, the peel smooths out wrinkles and fine lines that occur in the upper and lower eyelids.

This nonsurgical alternative to eye lift surgery can also help tighten the upper eyelid skin, improving the appearance of hooded or drooping eyelids. Chemical peels are often used in combination with blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, for this reason.

What to expect from a chemical peel

Dr. Morris consults with you prior to your procedure to determine the best treatment plan to achieve your cosmetic goals. We perform chemical peels in-office, and these take around 15 minutes, though deeper peels may take longer.

After your peel, we apply a protective ointment to soothe any redness or mild irritation that occurs. The treated areas generally take up to a week to heal from a light peel, while a medium or deep peel may take one to several weeks for full recovery.

In most cases, you can resume your normal activities immediately after your procedure. While the effects aren’t permanent, you can maintain long-lasting results with routine chemical peels every two to five weeks.

At Radiance Wellness MediSpa, Dr. Morris and her team are here to help you look and feel your best, and chemical peels are a popular, noninvasive alternative to eye lift surgery. To book a consultation, call our office or make an appointment online today.
