How Kybella®️ Can Help You Lose Your Double Chin

It’s possible to control the shape of fat in your body only when it’s located under sheets of tonable muscle. There are plenty of places in the body, though, where fat is subdermal, under the skin, but above muscle.

No amount of muscle work in the gym can rein in these deposits, and the way your body accesses fat to burn as a result of calorie-reduced dieting is unpredictable. One of the common trouble spots many people have is in the submental region — the dreaded “double chin.”

The only way to reshape this problem area is to remove the subdermal fat. Dr. Carrie L. Morris and the team at Radiance Wellness MediSpa offer their patients Kybella®, a revolutionary injectable that melts away the fat deposits that cause a double chin. If this is a problem spot for you, here’s what you need to know.

Natural acid

The secret behind Kybella is its active ingredient: deoxycholic acid. This substance is naturally produced in your digestive system for the absorption of fat, and Kybella uses a synthesized version to target the excess bulges under your chin — which are often there because of your genetics, rather than directly connected to body mass index.

When injected, deoxycholic acid destroys the cells that collect fat. Over the next few weeks, your body naturally metabolizes these damaged cells. For the best results, most patients require more than one session, and you can receive up to six Kybella treatments, as long as there’s one month between each session.

Because the destroyed adipose tissues serve as “containers” for fat, Kybella is typically a permanent treatment, since with these containers gone, fat can no longer be stored in the submental area.

What you can expect

Your Kybella session is a nonsurgical, in-office procedure that requires no special preparation. Avoiding over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen or acetaminophen ahead of your session may reduce post-procedure bruising.

A single Kybella session involves between 20 and 50 small injections, carefully placed for even coverage. Your face is numbed prior to these injections. Some patients describe the sensations experienced during Kybella treatment as on par with laser hair removal — with a similar deep warming feeling, but with a much shorter treatment time.

Swelling after treatment is common, so it may seem at first that your double chin has grown. This is expected and it typically takes up to a week to subside. This occurs after subsequent sessions, too, but some patients report that the effects dissipate faster after the second treatment.
